Recently, a colleague recalled his frustration with being provided an Excel version of an experimental design that was originally constructed in JMP. Although I understood his frustration, it is common practice that JMP data tables are often copied to Excel for inputting the responses of an experiment. This practice can cause relevant and consequential information, coding information, to be lost.

This seminar focuses on the importance of factor coding, an underappreciated aspect of the analysis of designed experiments. Factor coding is so important that, in JMP, continuous factors are coded automatically. The seminar will explain what factor coding is and why it is important. Additionally, it will demonstrate the many benefits in analysis that factor coding provides and the negative consequences in data analysis when factors are not coded. Lastly, this seminar will provide a simple and speedy way to recode the continuous factors in JMP after data is imported from Excel.
